I mentioned some of these would be sooc, right?  Well this is one of them.  Some photo’s you just can’t dress up no matter how many Photoshop Actions you use.

Two weeks ago I went on a business trip and came home only to discover our 5 year old refrigerator had broken just that day.  It was making a horrible “water torture” type of repetitive noise, which I quickly figured out (thanks to a Google search) how to turn off.  Unfortunately turning off the outside water/ice unit also caused the temperature to increase by about 20 degrees or so in the freezer and fridge.  So it’s not been cold enough to make ice, and while it’s kept the fridge contents “cool”, it’s not been cold, which how I like my milk and beer thankyouverymuch.

So after some additional research on my model, I discovered pretty quickly that the circuit board on this model goes bad after about two years.  Ours took five years, but it definitely went bad.  Major kudos to Maytag by the way, which as soon as I notified them of the problem, they said they’d send me the replacement part, then I could call in when I got it, and they’d schedule a repair guy to come out free of charge.  But here’s the thing… I think it’s been well documented that I am not a patient person, so when I found out it would take another week for repair guy to fit me into his schedule, I decided to give it a go myself.  How hard could it be, right?

So this is me, behind the fridge and about to install the new circuit board (excuse the manner of dress, it was hot back there).  And you know what.  I did it!  To say I’m pretty spankin’ proud of myself is an understatement.  I think I’ll buy myself dinner instead of making it as a suitable reward for tonight’s handy work.  :-)An up close view of the circuit board… I knew you’d want to see this:

And it works – YEAH!

Homework.  Always.

Admittedly I am blessed to have two very good students.  They both enjoy school, and have such strong work ethics.  It’s not unusual for L to get home from after school XC or soccer practice at 4:30 or 5, start on her homework, taking breaks only long enough to take a shower and eat supper, and not finish up till 10 or 11 at night.  M has less homework, as you would expect being in 6th grade, but neither of them ever have to be reminded to complete assignments or study for tests.  They make me proud in every way.

I remember growing up and my favorite day of the week was whenever I would walk in the door from school and realize that my mom had gone to the grocery store!  We actually had “after school food” again, and those days ROCKED!

Well, today will be one of those days for my kids.  :-)

I am sure you will have two very happy girls at the end of the day!! I love how this project is forcing us to photograph things you would not otherwise consider. It will be a year full of memories … both ordinary and extra-ordinary.

Guess who we found out is pretty darn nearsighted and is getting her first pair of glasses, and they look ADORABLE on her too!  We had a hard time picking out the frames because everything she tried looked cute on her.  They should be in in a week or two, but in the mean time…

Thanks Kim and Michelle! Kim, that was a vest I bought for L when we were in China. She was only 5 at the time, and it’s a size 6, but M was able to squeeze into it for the picture. As soon as we were done she was like “ok, can I take this off now?” :-)

Kim - January 24, 2012 - 12:09 am

Love this picture too! I love the vest – I am on my last outfit for my daughter (age 9) that I bought while in China.

2012 Half Marathon = DONE!!

Soooo super proud of her!

Lessons learned:  Tie shoes looser before the race starts.  She had a 2 inch welt across the top of her foot where the laces were pinching her feet and causing a good deal of pain (to the point she was in tears when she ran in).  I asked her when it started and she said around mile 7.  Then I asked why she didn’t just re-tie her shoe.  ”Because I didn’t want to stop”.

Not many people have ever told her she can’t do something, but today that’s exactly what happened, and she is one ticked-off teenager.  It ain’t pretty folks!

The half-marathon that she’s been building up to for the past three months; the one that takes as much mental preparation as it does physical preparation; the one that started at 7:30am this morning.  Yeah, that one.  Was canceled at 5:30am because of a tornado watch.  The girls would have taken this so much better if we didn’t drive out of the city with blue skies sprinkled in between the clouds.  At 7:34am someone from the back seat said “we’d be on our way”.  At 8am that was followed by “we’d be finishing up mile 4″.  And at 9:30am, when they would have all crossed the finish line, I pulled up at one of the girls homes and started dropping them off.

The race has been rescheduled.  Tomorrow we’ll leave at 5am and drive the two hours back down to try again.  The weather man still calls for 50% chance of rain, which the girls don’t mind at all.  They’ve run in the rain plenty of times.  Now, if I can just convince Mother Nature to hold off on any potential tornado conditions then we’ll be good to go…

I think I need am iPhone, the pictures are really good! :-) It would be nice to have a smaller camera with me, especially for this 366 challenge. Good luck with the race!

Color Schemes

I found this idea on Pinterest, and have wanted to give it a try.  It’s a decorating idea where you take something, like a picture, or the colors from a vase, or a sweater, etc, and then pull out the five colors that immediately catch your eye, and now you have a decorators color palette to use for a room.

So I gave it a try with this photo that I took the other day, and I really like the idea.  I have a warm brown and rust toned color scheme in my basement, and a downstairs bathroom that doesn’t match that theme at all… but you know what, I think this might work in that space.

Home Improvement

Update:  Just found another one…  Young House Love

If you’ve been paying attention, you may have noticed that I’m a bit of a home improvement junkie.  My resources, time, knowledge, and skills make me somewhat limited, but that doesn’t stop me from doing what I can, and dreaming about the rest.

Recently I’ve been collecting some blogs in my Google Reader that are people just like me, with home improvement dreams, but the difference is they’re making it happen, and I’m having fun sitting on the sidelines and watching them work through their plans.  These are some that I’ve been enjoying lately:

7th House On The Left – This is the newest one I’m reading, and they’ve got me hooked.  Their house is similar to mine on the outside, and I think that’s what drew me in.  I really want them to come and redesign my house, and bring me $50,000 to do it with while they’re at it!  They’re finishing the kitchen now and it is sweet.

The Lettered Cottage - They’re actually doing a pilot show for HGTV, and I love that cottage look that they go for.  I love it when people just work with what they’ve got, but in a way that I never ever would have thought of.

What Emily Does – Very cute.  I found this blog because The Lettered Cottage.  From what I understand “Emily’s” house, is one of the homes they did for the their pilot series.  There are some things I wouldn’t do, but she’s young and has lots of energy and ideas, seems to be a little scatterbrained, and that combination just makes me laugh.

Under the Sycamore – My very favorite blog!  I started reading over a year ago, and I’m completely hooked.  She’s full of home inspiration, as well as being a freaking INCREDIBLE photographer, crafter, brilliant mother of four young children, and fairly recently they’ve announced they’re adopting SN from China.  Their dossier is almost ready to go over now; it’s taking a tour of the consulates to get all the stamps and seals, etc.  I never started reading that blog because of China adoption, but when they announced it I was just tickled for them.

Hiatus… already?

My camera and I are parted temporarily, but I have specific instructions to two people that photo’s are to be taken!  They will be shared for days 16 and 17, albeit a little bit late.  I’ll do a catch up on day 18.

:-)

I’ll look forward to the 18th! :-)

This reminded me so much of a photo I took not long after I got my first DSLR.  As I looked through that file, there were many more out of focus photo’s that for some reason I didn’t seem inspired to delete, but there were definitely some keepers too…

Thanks Sara! I really wanted to take the girls back to China, but with cars and colleges quickly approaching, a trip like that is just not in the budget. We don’t really see our travel groups because we’re spread out all over the US, but most of us stay in touch via social media sites, so at least that’s something. :-)

Thanks,
Julia

Wow, I always remember you and your beautiful daughters from Hunan. Everyone gets lovelier and lovelier. Is there a reunion trip in the picture?
