Banquet and Awards Week…

L had her soccer banquet last night, and M has hers tonight.  L was supposed to go to an awards ceremony tonight because apparently she’s getting some award for top 9th grade history student (who knew!), but has opted out of going because 1) she has benchmarks on Friday that she’s got to study for, and 2) we’ve heard awards night is mainly focused on seniors, and 3) it can last upwards of 3+ hours.  She’ll be able to pick up her award at school Friday, so it’s all good.

Last night L got a really fun surprise that none of us were expecting.  Since the varsity won their first ever state championship, we knew that the night would be focused on them and all of their achievements, but first they did give three awards to our JV squad: Top Offensive, Top Mid-Field, and Top Defensive player awards, which were voted on by all the players.  Well, L got the top offensive award, yeah!!  :-)

As L was sitting down:

M: “Mom, L sure gets a lot of awards and stuff doesn’t she?  It’s because she’s so good at sports and school and stuff.”

Me: Well, you’re pretty good at sports and school and stuff too.”

M:  ”Yea, that’s true.”

Emergency Prep…

It was four or five years ago that I was at a business dinner and was approached by the hostess that I had an urgent phone call.

About an hour later M and I were on our way to the ER via ambulance where she’d been diagnosed as having an allergic reaction to pine nuts.  Since then, we’ve avoided them like the plague, in fact M won’t go near any nuts, she just doesn’t like them (with the only exclusion being her favorite PB&J sandwiches).

Last night L was out with friends, so I opted for an easy Stouffers dinner for M and I.  She didn’t really like the taste of the Rigatoni Pasta and Chicken with pesto sauce dinner, so only ate a little, then went back to her room to finish up homework.  About 9pm or so, and just as L arrived home, M came in my room crying and complaining of a tummy ache and her arms were itching due to a return of the dreaded eczema.  So I gave her a Rolaids and rubbed her down with some Eucerin cream then sent her back to bed.  It wasn’t ten minutes later that she came back in, this time coughing and her body on fire with red welts that were spreading so rapidly that it looked like she had welts on top of welts.

So we got out the Benedryl, gave her a double dose (it’s what they did in the ER) and looked for anything in the cabinet that might help with the itching, which was rapidly getting worse.  After some quick Dr. Google research, I left L in charge, stuck M in a tepid bath, and headed to CVS to get some cortisone cream and Epson salts.  On the way, L calls and says M can hardly breathe, I can hear an hysterical M in the background, alternately coughing and crying so hard she couldn’t catch her breath.  So I talk her down from the cliff and explain she can’t breahe because she’s crying so much, which was exactly the case.  I have no doubt her throat was closing up, causing her to cough too, but hysterical tears didn’t help.

I was only gone 15 minutes tops, the CVS is literally just two miles away, and dumped a half box of Epson salts in the water with her and she soaked for 15 minutes.  By the time she got out, the Benedryl had kicked in.  So I rubbed her still very swollen body down with some Aveeno cream, and by then she was so sleepy and worn out, she was able to fall asleep pretty easily.

She’s still a bit swollen today, but is doing much better than I expected given her condition just 12 hours ago.

As I was rummaging through our overflowing medicine cabinet last night, I got so angry at myself for not being better prepared for this type of emergency.

I kept wasting time checking labels for stuff to make sure it wasn’t expired, and our Epi-Pen, was hidden out of site, to the point I had totally forgotten we even had it!  ARGH!

So I just went through and completely reorganized the whole thing, throwing out a bag full of expired med’s, one as far back as 2007, and many with 2010 expiration dates.  Mom of the year award?  Yep, just hand it over…

M has her annual physical scheduled in June, and I’ll be scheduling another allergy test at that time.  I think the last “prick” test she had she was only 4 years old, so it’s time for another one to see what we really need to be wary of.

Candis - Julia – our medicine cabinet looks exactly the same – with loads and loads of meds due to eczema flair ups with Anna. We have tried masses of meds over the years, as I am sure you have as well. I recently did a purge of old meds too and the trash can was full! Poor M. Anna can SO relate to this. Hope to see you all this summer. We’re having fun with Harris over here! :-) May 10, 2012 – 8:31 pm

State Champions!

Two years ago, L’s team sat in this same spot with the gold ribbons and medals around their necks… and now it’s M’s turn!  Congratulations to her entire team and their AMAZING accomplishment over the weekend.  The team was up against more than just your normal obstacles and was able to over come every one of them; they are so deserving of this!

Tournament Weekend…

M and her team played SO good this weekend; I was so proud of how they played.  They made it to the final and today’s match was a nailbiter from beginning to end.  It went into overtime with the score still at 0-0, but that wasn’t due to lack of shots – both goalies had their hands full this afternoon.  Finally in overtime, the other team made a shot on goal and it bounced off one of our defenders feet and hit the side of the net.  That was the only goal of the game, so since we made the other teams goal, we’ll just consider this one a tie.  :-)

Home Improvement

I think I have always been into do-it-yourself home improvement projects.  This happened long before HGTV and DIY shows became staples in my television routine.  I’ve just always gotten satisfaction in doing it myself (to a point), and that’s lucky for me, because it goes hand-in-hand with a typical lack of budget that I have.  More recently I’ve become infatuated with home improvement blogs, and my Google Reader is now inundated with all kinds of blogs that update progress on their homes regularly.  One thing they all have in common is a link on their blogs marked “house tour”, where they show all the before and after, or in-progress shots of their homes.  I love those links – it lets me peek into other people’s front doors and see what they’re doing in there. (in very non R-rated way of course).

A couple months ago I added a category on this blog for “home improvement”, then went back and retagged a bunch of posts so I could more easily find them.  Now I’ve decided to dedicate some additional posts to what I’ve been doing around this house for the past nine years.  I was looking around last night, thinking of all the things I’d still like to do, and really need to make a point to just appreciate everything that’s already been done… especially since my money is going toward the kids savings due to upcoming huge expenses also known as cars and colleges.

Until I can get those pics and stories on here though, here’s a quick look at the few things already documented:

Textured Ceiling Removal

Shower Doors in Hallway Bath

Backyard Steps and Decks

Saturday Morning Date

I had a date with two handsome young men Saturday morning, then spent a good part of the remainder of the day editing the WAY too many photo’s I took!  If you’ve been around for awhile, you may recognize this family here, here and here.

Random…

This morning I decided to figure out some things about my camera that I never use.  One of them being the HD video feature.  Two people yesterday asked me about the 7D and video’s, and honestly I’ve never used it once, so I was on a mission to see how easy it was to use.  In a word: Easy.  So based on my mom’s suggestion, I’ll try and get some video of L and M’s games.

The other mission was to figure out spot metering.  I always keep my camera set to evaluative metering, which is the default, but I’m ending up with lots of dark faces due to backlit situations and spot lighting is supposed to handle that better.  So Daisy was my model this morning in a first attempt to get better at that… I’ve still got a way to go.

It was such a beautiful day here, and I was getting caught up on some yard work.  L came outside and decided she wanted to learn how to mow the lawn, then blow off the sidewalk.  By the look on her face, I think she’s still a little pooped from the games.

While L played with my new gas blower, I took a few flower photos…

5 Games in Less Than 24 Hours

Whew… what a weekend!  I’m so glad there’s Sunday left so we can all rest!!

The JV soccer tournament started at 4:30 Friday, so immediately upon school being let out we all headed to the fields.  A huge storm front was coming through and it rained on and off throughout the game, but the girls were victorious and won it just 1-0 from a first half goal by L.  The second game was supposed to start at 7:30pm, but it was on the back end of a downpour; 20 minutes later and the girls finally took the field.  It was a horrible game by any standards.  The referee’s were as bad as I’ve ever seen, and the pitch resembled something close to a small pond by this point than a soccer field.  We were down by one goal going into the half (thanks to the ref giving them 2000 penalty kick opportunities), but L scored to kick off the second half, then a teammate scored and we were able to tie it.  We consider that a win, since the ref was so obviously making calls in favor of the other team.

It was 10pm before we got home and 11pm before we were able to wind down enough to get some sleep.  This morning came bright and early since L had to be back at the fields at 8am. Whoever won this third game was going to the final…  That game went our way at the beginning with a goal from our team, then right before the half, the other team tied it up.  I had to leave soon for M’s game in another part of the city, but was standing right behind the net when one of our midfielders made a run for it.  She overshot the goal though, and L picked it right up.  This shot looks like the keeper could have gotten it, but L had some heat on it and the keeper never touched it.  This ended up being the game winner!

Right after this I left for M’s game, and it was amazing!  Her team played so well, and after three close games from L and her team, my mind was so ready for an easy blow-out.  They won 6-1.  This is M on her way to goal.

We had to hurry back after M’s game, because L’s team was in the final at 1pm, so we grabbed some fast food and went straight back to the fields were L was playing.  The team they were playing against had not been scored on in the tournament and had been beating other teams by 4 and 5 goals, so I was not optimistic.  Our only saving grace, was that their players were as tired as we all were!  L and many of her teammates had played every second of every game, and they were beyond exhausted.  But after 70 minutes of play, the game was still tied at 0-0.  So we went to two five minute overtimes, and at the end of that… still 0-0.  We were playing awesome, but just could not put it in the net.  Now it went to PK’s though, and we were tied for the first three people, but then our fourth girl hit the post, and that was the game.  The other team won by that one goal differential.  It was a tough way to loose, but everyone was so tired by that point, we really didn’t care.  As runner ups, they got a big ole’ trophy anyway, and I couldn’t be more pleased with how both of my girls played this weekend!

A Hat Trick… Almost

A “hat trick” is a term that originated from ice hockey (I think) but it’s used in almost any sport (except maybe basketball) when a player scores 3 goals in one game.  Well, L came darn close last night.  Her team scored 3 goals in the game last night.  L had the assist on the first goal, then she followed that by scoring the second and third goals!  Needless to say, she came off the field with a big ‘ole smile on her face.  :-)  This also puts her as the current leading scorer on the team, but there’s a long season left, we’re only about half way through it.  I know she’s hoping to make the varsity team as a sophomore next year, but she’ll just have to wait and see.  The varsity team is not so easy to get on to, specially as an underclassman… they’re currently ranked 2nd in the nation.  No, not in the state – 2nd in the NATION, they’re crazy good.

3.30.12 Update:  L just got asked to play with the varsity in Tuesday night’s game.  She’s scared, nervous, proud, disappointed to be leaving her current squad and friends (even if it is only for one game), and thrilled all rolled into one little package.

Karen Jacobs - Are you… or is anyone taking video of these games? Wish I wasn’t such a wimp, but it would be great to see highlights of both the girls games.March 29, 2012 – 8:25 pm

An Unexpected Visitor

My parents called Saturday and told me I should come by and see their new neighbor – a very large Barred Owl that was parked in the tree right outside their kitchen window.  Well, by the time I got there, he had left for the day.  They called back Sunday morning and said he was back, so I grabbed my camera and went over, and sure enough – a VERY large owl was on a limb about 15 or 20 feet from their house.  This time though he was faced the other direction and our view was blocked by the branches and leaves, but it was still amazing to see one so close and not in captivity.

So I went out through the garage, hid behind a car and that was about as close as I could get, but he did hear me and turned to give me a look.  He wasn’t impressed at all with my big white lens though, and when I reached up to take some more pictures, he decided he’d had enough.

The owl is about the size of Daisy’s torso.  Daisy weighs about 18lbs, so I’m guessing the owl may be in the 15lb range.  He didn’t look like he was missing an meals…

Pretty as a picture

I was taking out the garbage and some mail this morning, turned back toward the house and really enjoyed the picture my house makes in the spring.  My office is in one of the front windows and right now I’m looking at the cherry tree dropping it’s pink leaves with each small breeze and it makes it look like pink and white snow coming down.  So I had to grab the camera again and take a few more before the blooms fade completely.  Oh… and couldn’t leave out the loropetalum, which is also in full bloom right now too.  :-)

The Lake House

My parents house at the lake is currently undergoing a series of overhauls.  The plan is that as soon as L can drive, my parents will sell their house near us and move to the lake on a full-time basis.  So what once was “acceptable” and in the “it’ll do for now” category, now needs to get updated to become ready for full-time inhabitants.  I haven’t figured out yet if this is “exciting and fun” for them, or “stressful and even more stressful”.  Perhaps a good bit of both.

M and I decided we needed to head down there and break in the paddle boat and kayaks for spring plus give our feedback on the home-improvement progress.  The water was just perfect, or at least that’s how Daisy felt about it.  We opted out of swimming, but gave the boats a good workout.  Here’s M and her friend G taking them for a test drive… and Daisy of course.

My Cherry Tree

I bought this tree on a whim one day, that and because it was a good price, for about $15 I think at the local home improvement store.  I remember it was when I had a Honda Accord and it barely fit stretched out in the back seat.  It was maybe 4 feet tall and I wasn’t sure it was going to make it.  I’ve never had good luck planting flowering trees, but the next year it gave me a few blooms, which was encouraging.  I think it’s now been 5 or 6 years since I planted it near the corner of our front steps and it is the most beautiful, tall, luscious flowering tree with thousands of blooms in varying shades of white and pink.  I took these photo’s last year, and actually had this one printed, framed, and it’s hanging in M’s room.  It’s probably one of my all time favorite floral photo’s.

So this year I’m trying to go at it from different angles, plus using textures (from Chasing Dreams Summertime collection), and I’m pretty happy with these two so far.  The tree is now probably close to 20 feet tall from trunk to tip, so I can’t get close enough with my 28-70 lens.  These were all taken with my 70-200 f2.8L IS, which is still my heart-throb.  It rarely comes off my camera.

More flowers…

Just can’t get enough of these flowers, and spring has just begun around here.  Maybe next year I should do a 365 flower challenge instead…  :-)
